MeshRite

MeshRite™  is a unique depth filtration screen offering exceptional sand control and retained permeability for wells in heterogeneous reservoirs.

MeshRite is a patented three dimensional sand control system formed by wrapping layers of compressed stainless steel wool onto perforated base pipe and then covering it with a perforated outer shroud.

MeshRite: Exceptional Open Flow Area and Plugging Resistance for Heterogeneous Sands

MeshRite is formed by wrapping stainless steel wool mesh over base pipe then covered with a perforated shroud.  MeshRite’s 40% open flow area and greater than 3000 Darcy air permeability results in virtually no additional resistance to flow in the near wellbore area or across the screen. With MeshRite, operators gain higher initial and retained permeability and superior well productivity compared to any two dimensional gap-based screens. It is available in standard and high compression versions depending on the amounts of fines to be managed.

The Challenge

Sand control decisions are complex. Most reservoirs are comprised of heterogeneous sands that vary widely in particle size and shape. Non-uniform particle sizes make sizing traditional two dimensional gap-based screens such as wire wrap screen, slotted liner, or woven laminate premium screens difficult. These screens rely on homogeneous or uniform sand particles forming stable bridges over two dimensional gaps in the filter media. With proper gap sizing, stable bridges can stop sand from entering and plugging both the filtration media and the wellbore itself. Heterogeneous sands make sizing almost impossible and tend to plug two dimensional pores.

The Solution

MeshRite gives operators a sand control system that is insensitive to variations in formation particle sizes. It has three dimensional pores that vary in size and shape, does not require the sand sampling and screen sizing of two dimensional screens. MeshRite’s pore structure offers high initial permeability and high plugging resistance for a broad range of reservoir conditions.

This capability reduces the costs of formation sample collection and laboratory analysis. It also reduces the risks associated with running a screen into a well where the particle size distribution is not known, or varies widely from heel to toe. MeshRite’s three dimensional pore structure has demonstrated exceptional performance on all six factors that define efficient sand control balanced with maximum well productivity:

  • 40% open flow area
  • 3000 Darcy initial permeability
  • High retained permeability
  • High plugging resistance
  • High erosion resistance
  • Structural strength and stability

For highly corrosive environments we recommend  a variety of solutions made with Tri-D Weave™ filter media.

2015 Alberta Exporter of the Year

MeshRite outperforms all other screens in retained permeability, a key factor in long term well productivity.

MeshRite Applications

The near wellbore region is the most critical zone influencing well productivity. MeshRite’s high open flow area and plugging resistance minimize flow restriction and the risk of erosion making it ideal for the following applications:

  • Reservoirs with poorly defined grain size distributions
  • Reservoirs with widely varying grain sizes (poorly sorted sands)
  • Stand alone screen in open hole horizontal wells*
  • Stand alone screen in cased holes**
  • High flow rate oil/water/gas wells
  • Thermal and steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) wells
  • Water producers/injectors requiring sand control
  • Remedial sand control recompletions inside failed completions
  • Alternative to gravel packing
  • Support screen for gravel packing or fracturing
  • Pump protection including high-flow-rate ESP wells
  • Drill Stem Tests (DSTs) on exploration wells where particle sizes are unknown

*Success will depend on proper drilling/completion fluids practices, please consult an Absolute Technical Application Manager for guidelines.
**Installing a stand alone sand screen in cased-hole is inherently risky, depending on fluid viscosity, sand quality and perforation design. Please consult an Absolute Technical Applications Manager before doing so.

Benefits

Optimized Production

MeshRite’s high flow capacity and plugging resistance optimize the balance between efficient sand control and optimal well productivity

Longer Well Life and Improved Asset Recovery

High erosion and corrosion resistance mean longer well life with fewer work overs

High mechanical strength and flexibility allows the screen to resist damage due to load force stresses

Risk Reduction

Gain insurance against lack of reservoir characterization, or unexpected variations in particle size distribution

Cost Savings

Reduce completion costs compared to gravel packs or many conventional screen alternatives

Reduce screen inventory during completion work since no sizing of screen gap is required
